Elmer J. MacDonald died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Sunday, April 24, 2016, in Center Ossipee, NH at the age of 92.

Elmer was predeceased by his wife Alice G. (Galvin) MacDonald and is survived by his children, Mary McDermott and her husband Michael of Manchester NH, Edward MacDonald and his wife Maureen of Center Ossipee, NH, and Kevin MacDonald of Derry, NH; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  He was lovingly cared for by his sister, Sister Bonaventure MacDonald, OSF who provided much support and companionship.  He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Elmer C. MacDonald and Sarah (Boyd) MacDonald, brother Daniel Allen MacDonald, and his sisters Helen McDonough, and Rita Griffin.

Elmer was born on November 8, 1923 in Malden, MA, and graduated from Malden High School Class of 1942.  After graduation he enlisted into the US Navy and achieved the rank of Radioman 2nd Class.  He saw action in the South Pacific including Guam, and Iwo Jima where his ship, LCI-466, sustained severe damage. Elmer received a citation which read, “For excellent service in the line of his profession as a member of the ship on Feb. 17, 1945, during close in fire support operations at Iwo Jima.  He gave valuable assistance to the ship’s Pharmacist’s Mate in effecting prompt and efficient treatment of the wounded.  His ability to give competent first aid, independent of supervision was an invaluable asset to the ship and contributed toward the success of this hazardous mission.  His conduct gives evidence of his great value to the naval service.”

After the war, Elmer attended the Vesper George School of Art earning a diploma for successfully completing the course in illustration in 1948.  Following graduation Elmer began working for Massachusetts Electric in the display department.  Elmer was promoted to display manager, a department which he managed for many years and later retired as a commercial service account representative. Elmer also was a member of Lt. Norman Prince VFW Post 1506 where he helped start the Princemen Drum and Bugle Corp. in 1946 which was formed from returning servicemen.  The Princemen won National Championships in 1946, 48, 49, 53, and 1955 he also taught Drum Corps for the Shoemakers, of Haverhill, Ma, and the Gatesmen of South Boston, Ma. 

Elmer was an accomplished artist.  He had many an art show in local banks and libraries. He enjoyed participating in the Ossipee art classes.  He was a dedicated, witty and generous husband and father who loved all his family unconditionally.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, April 26, 2016 from 6-8PM at Lord Funeral Home, Wolfeboro, NH.  A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at 11:00am at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, Alton, NH.  Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford, MA on Wednesday at 2:00pm.  All are welcome to attend and celebrate Elmer’s life.
