Honorable John David Knox

The Honorable John David Knox, of Santis Drive, died on Friday, January 15, 2016 at the Mountain View Community, Ossipee, NH.

David was born May 7, 1938 in Woodsville, New Hampshire to John Franklin and Elizabeth (Davison) Knox. His family moved to Yarmouth, Maine before settling in Farmington, Maine. David attended Mount Blue High School and went to undergraduate school in Canada at Bishop’s University. He also studied at the University of Maine Farmington and Yale University.

On June 26, 1965 David married his wife Gay Nelson in Gardiner, Maine and had lived in Farmington, Maine for several years. Following his education David’s first teaching position was at Sanford High School, Sanford, Maine. After moving to Wolfeboro, NH he taught American Government and History at Kingswood Regional High School in Wolfeboro, NH for over thirty years. David passed on his enthusiasm for government to his students by encouraging involvement in clubs such as Youth and Government, Model Congress, and Close Up. He also facilitated visits from various candidates to Kingswood to get students more involved in the political process.

David was a long time member of the Wolfeboro and Carroll County Republican committees.

After retiring from teaching, he represented the towns of Wolfeboro, Tuftonboro, and Moultonborough, New Hampshire for eight years in the House of Representatives in Concord. He was proud to sponsor the bill naming the Corporal Matthew Stanley Memorial Bridge, which honored his former student.

David always had a passion for music. He had been a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church Choir for over forty years and sang in the Kingswood production of “The Music Man.” David also sang with the Clearlakes Choral and recently joined a group celebrating the ten year anniversary of Saint Katharine Drexel Church, Alton, NH, singing The Gloria, written by Andy Campbell.In retirement, David became more involved with All Saints Church by serving on the vestry and the search committee to find the current rector, Reverend William Petersen. Retirement gave him more time with his family for taking hikes in the woods, walking on the Bridge Falls Path and visits to the Front Bay Park in Wolfeboro, NH.

He was predeceased by his wife of 38 years Gay (Nelson) Knox, his parents John and Elizabeth Knox and a brother Peter Knox.

He is survived by his daughters Beth Ann Knox, Ossipee, NH and Sarah Olkkola and her husband Justin, Ossipee, NH. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Tyler and Alexis Olkkola, a companion Penny Curtis, Wolfeboro, NH, his sister Jane Knox, Brunswick, ME, his brother James Knox and his wife Elaine, Wilton, ME, two niece, two nephews.

Calling hours will be Friday, January 22, 2016 from 5-7PM at Lord Funeral Home, Wolfeboro, NH.  A Celebration of his life will be Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 1:00pm at the All Saints Episcopal Church, South Main Street, Wolfeboro, NH.
