Jeanne S. Harriman

July 24, 1924 ~ January 11, 2017 (age 92) 92 Years Old

 Jeanne S. Harriman, 92, passed away peacefully at her home with her family at her side on Wednesday, January 11, 2017.

She was born July 24, 1924 in Plymouth, MA to the late Curtis and Marion (Bliss) Steacie.  She was the wife of the late Norris B. Harriman for 37 years.  She was raised in Wellesley, MA and summered in Rocky Nook, MA with her family or Waits River, VT with her grandparents.  She graduated from Wellesley, MA High School, Vermont Junior College, Montpelier, VT and the University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH, Class of 1946 for which she was Class Secretary for many years.  She maintained lifelong friendships with many classmates from both colleges.

She was a business education teacher in Antrim, NH High School from1946 to 1951 where she also coached girl’s basketball and softball.  She met her husband, Norris, in Antrim and they were married in 1947.  They lived in Pembroke, NH for several years, then moved to Wolfeboro in 1960 where she enjoyed living for 57 years.  She worked with her husband in his business, Norris Harriman Construction, Inc., from 1960 to 1984 and with her son, Brad, from 1984 to 2006.  While raising her children, Nancy and Brad, she continued teaching business education in the Kingswood Regional High School summer school and adult education programs, often substituted in local schools, and was both a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader.  She was a member of the First Congregational Church, most recently serving on the Properties Board.

She was a Trustee of the Wolfeboro Public Library for 27 years and wrote the grant application that resulted in the new library in the 1970’s.  She was active in Friends of the Library, particularly the book sale and Book and Author Luncheon.  She enjoyed many activities in the community including programs at the library, summer concerts in Cate Park, First Night, Great Waters Music Festival, and Wolfeboro Players.

She especially enjoyed spending time with her extended family at the family camp on Winter Harbor, Lake Winnipesaukee.  She spent time at Ft Myers Beach in the winters from 1975 to 2014.  Her many interests and activities included traveling, walking, bicycling, cross-country skiing, hiking, swimming, gardening, and reading.  She was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and Celtics, celebrating her 80th birthday at a Red Sox game.

Jeanne leaves behind her two children, daughter, Nancy Mayville and husband Lynn, and son, Brad and wife Terri.  She also leaves behind her granddaughters. Nicole Fass and husband Alan, and Stacie Harriman and friend Carl Musilek, and great-granddaughter, Ava Desrosiers.  She leaves behind her brother, John Steacie and wife Ann, and many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her husband, Norris, her parents, Curtis and Marion, and her sisters, Marjorie Steacie and Carol Whalen.

SERVICES: Calling hours will be Wednesday, January 18 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Lord Funeral Home, 23 Club Lane, Wolfeboro, NH.  A service will be held Thursday, January 19, 11:00 AM at the First Congregational Church, 115 S Main St, Wolfeboro, NH.  Private burial will be held by the family in the spring.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Jeanne’s memory may be made to the Wolfeboro Public Library Foundation, on-line or to PO Box 472, Wolfeboro, NH 03894, or the UNH Foundation for scholarships, on-line or to 15 Strafford Avenue, Durham, NH 03824.
