Christel Balzer, 86, of Wolfeboro, NH and Stowe, VT, died peacefully on Saturday August 4, 2018.
She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Henry G. Balzer. She is survived by her brother, Horst Loos of Germany, her "3 good girls": daughters Joanne Balzer, Susanne (Dixie) Balzer and Christina Wilson, her son-in-law Christopher Wilson, and beloved grandchildren Emily and Matthew Wilson.
Christel was born in Wanne-Eickel, Germany, daughter of Emma and Willie Loos, and attended the University of Freiburg. She came to the U.S. in 1955 to marry Henry G. Balzer in Dekatur IL. They first lived in NY on Long Island, owning delicatessens. They moved to Stowe, VT and bought the Alpine Motor Lodge in 1976. They operated the lodge with a German restaurant until 1986. She helped Henry, Joanne and Dixie run their business until 2012.
Christel was a warrior until the end. Her family and friends were able to say goodbye to her, sending her on her next journey with much love. She will be remembered as a feisty woman. She enjoyed concerts in Cate Park, Wolfeboro, NH, was an avid "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy" fan, and enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and crosswords puzzles in both German and English. Christel not only spoiled her grandchildren, but her many "grand dogs" that were part of her life at one time or another. She loved cooking during the holidays and having her family with her, especially playing “Mensch Aergere Dich Nicht”. She was so well-loved that she would spend her birthday at home, in order to receive over 35 calls from family and friends.
Calling hours will be on September 13, 2018 from 5-8pm at Lord Funeral Home, Wolfeboro, NH. Graveside services will be held 11:00am on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at the Riverside Cemetery, Stowe, VT. A Gathering of family and friends will follow at their home on Maple Street, Stowe, VT.
