Clive Hare Obituary

Brookfield, NH

Clive H. Hare, 76, of Brookfield, New Hampshire, died peaceful at home on Saturday, July 14, 2018. He was surrounded by his children and his beloved wife of 50 years, Jean.

Clive was born in Tamworth, England on September 24, 1941, to Stanley and Irene Hare. As a child he loved to stare at the sky and at 14 discovered a comet with a telescope he made himself. He immigrated to the United States in 1964 at the age of 23 with $300 in his pocket. He settled in Boston, Massachusetts and began working as a coatings chemist for Cadillac Paint in Alston. Clive returned to England in 1967 and met his future wife Jean. After a brief courtship Clive returned to America and sent for Jean who immigrated to the states in December of that same year. The two married in June of 1968 and settled in Stoughton, Massachusetts where Clive started his own consulting business. For the next 40 years Clive grew Clive H. Hare, Inc. a successful formulating business creating paint and coatings for NASA, the Navy, Air Force, DuPont, Sherwin Williams, and NYCO just to name a few. His impact on the coatings industry is legendary. His numerous books and articles are used as reference materials and text books for chemists all over the world. Clive was humble about his success but proud to say his paint is on the moon. Clive and Jean moved to Lakeville, Massachusetts where the business grew until his retirement in 2005. His impact on the coatings industry cannot be understated.

Clive and Jean moved to Brookfield, New Hampshire in retirement so they could be closer to their favorite retreat, Treasure Island in Shapleigh, Maine. He loved to travel to exotic places, especially in Mexico, Central America and Peru. He loved to write and self-publish many novels. He loved classical music and read extensively. He never stopped learning! Most importantly he loved his family and friends. He was a remarkable man and will be deeply missed.

Clive is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Jean (Hall) Hare, Brookfield, NH and his three children Kirsten, her husband Ira Camp, their children Gillian and William of Arundel, Maine; Robert, his wife Cynthia, their children Lauren and Alex of Sterling, Massachusetts; Jonathan, his wife Rachel of Lebanon, Maine. Clive also leaves behind his brother and sister in law Rex and Sandra Gordon of Birmingham, England and his nephews Mark and Paul.
