John Alward Obituary

John E. Alward, 69 passed away on Monday, July 22, 2019.

John was born in Waltham, MA. the son of the late Robert F. and Georgiena F. (Sawyer) Alward.  John was raised in the Center Ossipee, NH area where he attended Ossipee Central School as qwell as Kingswood Regional High School in Wolfeboro, NH.

John joined the US Army where he served in Vietnam.  He returned home as a Sgt., earning the Bronze Star, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm and the Air Medal.

After returning home he worked for American Built Rite in MA., and then for National Fence and Granite of Tamworth, NH with Garfield Dicey and crew.  While working for them he met and married his wife of 47 years, Carol Ann (Paige).  They moved to West Stuartstown area where they had a daughter Dianne in 1973.  He worked at the Spa Restaurant in West Stuartstown, NH.

He the returned to a life in the woods driving truck for Lava Rancourt, Albert Cloutier, Gaston Laflamme and Gaston Rodrique the changing his ambitions to becoming a wood crane operator for Gaston Rodrique, Roy Amey and St. Regis.  During this time he met his best friends Bobby Rancourt, Gary Carpenter and many others, where the frequented the Riviera/Red Bones often in their younger years and the Spa Restaurant in the years to follow.

He then operated his own firewood business, “The Northern Winds” for a bit.  In 1993 they moved to the Mount Washington Valley where he spent the next 20 years working for Mount Washington Towing until failing health caused his retirement.

Later in 2012, they moved to Hardeeville, SC where he made many more friends.

He loved spending time with any and all his family, casinos, any type of lottery, fishing, traveling, and his cats.  He also loved the “Hitching Post” subs and lengthy conversations with any and all that would listen.

He is predeceased in death by his parents, sister Martha Welch, nieces Melissa Alward and Connie Welch and nephews Frank Welch and Jason Alward as well as his father in law William Paige.

John is survived by his wife Carol Ann, daughter Dianne Alward and grandsons Derrac and Jesse, Brother Robert Alward and his wife Deborah, brother David Alward and his wife Deborah and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by his mother-in-law Hermance Paige, brother-in-law Robert Paige and his wife Cathy, sister-in-law Linda Caron and her husband Dave,  brother-in-law Clark Paige and his wife Jolene, sister-in-law Sunshine Marchand and her husband Tinomme and many more nieces and nephews as well as great nephews and a great niece.

He will be dearly missed by family and friends. 

There will be no formal viewing, funeral or services at the family’s request.  There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date to be announced.
