Lawrence Leslie Smart, 65 of Varney Road, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, April 5, 2018 at the West Roxbury Veteran’s Hospital, West Roxbury, MA, with his children by his side.
Larry was born August 18, 1952 in Wolfeboro, NH the son of Martha Ann (Shannon) Smart and Lawrence Arthur Smart. He was a 1970 graduate of Kingswood Regional High School, Wolfeboro, NH. Larry was a proud Marine Corps Veteran, who served his country in the Vietnam War. During that time he was the Flight Engineer for his General’s, KC 130, airplane, flying between Vietnam, Japan and their home base in California. He was a member of the American Legion, Harriman Hale Post #18, Wolfeboro, NH, and many will remember him marching in uniform in Wolfeboro’s Town Parades next to his uncle and friend, Carl Shannon.
He leaves behind his three children, Mark Smart and his spouse Tammy, Center Sandwich, NH; Joshua Smart and his spouse Erin Hartford, Wolfeboro, NH and Anna Smart and her spouse Michael Naramore, Ossipee, NH. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, his mother Martha (Shannon) French, Tuftonboro, NH and his siblings, Steve Smart, Wolfeboro, NH, Martha Jane Smart, Wolfeboro, NH, Bonnie Pennell, Tuftonboro, NH, Tobey French, Wolfeboro, NH, Kevin French, Wolfeboro, NH, and Melonie Smart, Florida as well as his uncles, great uncles, nieces and nephews.
Larry led a busy and creative life, making a name for himself as an artist and stonemason. His varied hobbies include woodcarving, stone sculpting, iron working, gardening, writing and building/driving his hot rod. He was a gourmet cook, whose extended family looked forward to his Thanksgiving Chicken Pot Pie every year. In his later years he spent much of his time building a fantastic tree house on his property, where he loved to spend the warmer months. “Lala” lived life on his own terms. His gentle soul, stubborn personality and contagious laugh and smile will be greatly missed by many.
Calling hours will be held Saturday, April 14, 2018 from 1-3pm at Lord Funeral home, Wolfeboro, NH. A memorial service will be held following the calling hours at the funeral home.
