Miyoko Higa Cumberland, longtime resident of Ossipee, NH formerly of Rochester, NH passed away quietly at home, surrounded by her family, on April 10th, 2018 at the age of 77.
Born on August 9, 1940 in Okinawa, Japan, Miyoko met and subsequently married American Lind Levi Cumberland. Moving to the United States in 1963, Miyoko became a Navy wife, who dedicated herself to raising her three children while her husband was often away serving his country during his 20 years in the US Navy. Miyoko retired from General Electric in 2000, following nearly 20 years of employment at the Somersworth location.
A fascinated observer of all things beautiful, Miyoko's love of nature was reflected through the tending of her incredible flower gardens. She was an avid painter and her works adorn her home, and the homes of family members. Her Asian cooking style became legendary and she was always proud to share her recipes with any interested takers. Miyoko's selflessness and humility were well known. All her thoughts and efforts were based upon her number one priority: her family.
Miyoko will be badly missed by her husband of 56 years Lind Levi Cumberland of Ossipee, NH her three children: Linda Paiva of Canton CT, Edward Cumberland of Ossipee, NH and Kim Cumberland of Ossipee, NH. Miyoko is also survived by two brothers: Taeko and Taeshin, and one sister Sumiko, all of Okinawa, Japan.
Miyoko is also survived by four grandchildren: Jeremy Paiva of Burlington VT, Amy Paiva of Ithaca NY, Daniel Cumberland of Ossipee, NH and Miya Cumberland of Ossipee, NH along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Miyoko's life will be held on Saturday, May 5th at 11am at the First Congregational Church of Ossipee. The church is located at: 50 Route 16B, Center Ossipee, NH 03814.
