Anne Merola Obituary

Wolfeboro, NH

Anne B. Merola, formerly Anne B. Chiofalo, of Wolfeboro, NH passed peacefully into the loving arms of Our Lord just after midnight on December 30, 2018.  Born and raised in Queens, NY, Anne attended St. John’s University where she met and married her beloved husband of 57 years, Vincent A. Merola. Anne left her career as an elementary school teacher in the New York City school system to raise their two children, Matthew P. Merola of Santa Barbara, CA and Claire D. Denton of Stratham, NH.

Along with her husband and children, she leaves behind her loving son-in-law, Jason R. Denton and her grandchildren, Katherine and Thomas, who filled her with pride and joy. She also leaves behind her oldest brother, Dr. Frank P. Chiofalo of Hawthorne, NJ, her sisters’-in-law, Lorraine Rizzuto of Merrick, NY and Maureen Chiofalo of Malverne, NY, many nieces and nephews, and countless dear friends spread across NY, NJ, PA, CO and NH.  Anne is predeceased by her two brothers, William J. Chiofalo and John P. Chiofalo and her sister-in-law,
Gladys Chiofalo.

Anne brought so much love to so many people.  While raising her family in Montvale, NJ, she was known to all the neighborhood kids as Mom Merola.  Her famous Mac and Cheese on Halloween is a tradition that continues to this day! She was always ready with a smile and a silly joke to make everyone happy.

The 19 gardens she kept at their home in Montvale, NJ were a labor of love for her.  There wasn’t a spring or summer day you wouldn’t find her on her knees, hands deep in the dirt.  Everyone who visited the house would comment on how beautiful and inviting the gardens and pool were.  Not being able to stand seeing a plant struggling to survive, she was often found deadheading the plants as she waited for a table at a restaurant or walked through a public garden.

An avid skier, Anne was never happier than sharing the slopes and performing tricks with Vince.  The darling of Camelback Mountain, PA, Breckenridge & Keystone Colorado, Anne was amazing to watch on the hill.  She was nearly perfect in her technical skill and won several trophies for her amazing ability skiing moguls.

Anne had an incredible ear for music and was a naturally beautiful harmonizer and could whistle like a songbird.   She and Vince loved to sing at every chance possible. Their love of music was never more evident than the time they spent at St. Katharine Drexel Parish, singing praises to the Lord with the choir and cantoring on the altar.

A beloved Wife, Mother, Nannie and friend, the memories she made will be cherished forever.  She will be remembered for her unending kindness and generosity, her devotion to family, her incredible decorating sense and eye for color and details, her sense of humor and silliness, her athletic ability both on the ski hill and on the dance floor with her perfect partner, Vince, and her limitless love for her grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to St. Katharine Drexel Charity Fund.
