It is with profound sadness that the Sheldon family of Alton, NH, announces the passing of Beverly, 74, after six months of declining health, on May 4, 2025. We will forever miss her smile, the sound of her laughter, her wisdom, and the depth of the love she shared with her family and innumerable friends.
Born on June 2, 1950, in Pittsburgh, PA, to Elmer and Betty Schriber, Beverly grew up happily with her little sister Beth, her only sibling. Their enduring relationship was cherished for 65 years. Beverly was a second mom to Beth’s (and brother-in-law Bill Gardner’s) two daughters, Megan and Jenny, immensely enjoying her role as Aunt Beverly.
In 1972 after graduating from Muskingum College with a BS degree in education, Beverly went on to Penn State where she not only earned her master’s degree but also met the love of her life, Tim, her husband of 48 years. With both sharing the love of the outdoors and the quaint lifestyle of small New England towns, they settled in Alton, NH, overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee.
For many years, Beverly’s passion was teaching reading in the Governor Wentworth Regional School District. She championed each young learner as they struggled and developed a love for reading. During her teaching years, she became the mother to Matthew and Leigh. Matthew’s love of baseball, basketball, and golf provided many occasions for Beverly and Tim to beam with pride, as they juggled work schedules and Leigh’s needs to attend games. She retired early from the school district in order to provide more fully for 3-year-old Leigh who was diagnosed with autism. However, teaching and learning continued full bore as Beverly and Tim created “Leigh’s School” in their home, working with the Alton School District, other professionals, and volunteers to give Leigh optimum opportunity for learning. Leigh was the guiding star as the team collaborated on ways to meet her needs; Beverly was the forever-optimistic, passionate team leader.
During her brief illness at home, Beverly was overwhelmed with gratitude for the many letters, messages, and visits she received from current friends as well as so many from out of the past. She was also grateful for the care of Pastor Dawn Adams of the First Congregational Church of Wolfeboro. Beverly was a woman of deep faith.
Beverly leaves her beloved husband Tim of 48 years, her son Matthew (and wife Whitney and grandsons Parker and Paxton of Melbourne Beach, FL), and her daughter Leigh. In addition to her sister’s family that also includes Megan’s husband Scott Todd and Jenny’s partner Jeff Green and baby Matthew, Beverly leaves many wonderful family members in the Sheldon family: Tim’s brother Mike and wife Diane of Washington State and brother Tom and wife Cathy of Connecticut. Her many nieces and nephews were a never-ending source of wonder and pride.
In addition to family, Beverly leaves Shari McIntyre who for many years has lovingly assisted Leigh with her daily educational instruction at home and her integration into the community. She also leaves Stephanie Burke and Cristina Varney, Leigh’s treasured, lifelong friends.
Beverly’s greatest concern was and still is Leigh’s future…a future that would provide a forever home with safety, care, love, and happiness for her precious daughter. Beverly’s life ended too soon before her dream could be secured.
A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Wolfeboro, 115 South Main Street, Wolfeboro, NH; on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 1 pm. The church is on Main Street across from Carpenter School.
Beverly’s wish to honor her life and Leigh’s future is for donations to be made to “The Sheldon Family Trust for Leigh E. Sheldon.” The address is PO Box 1862, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.
