It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Carroll E. Shackford, who died suddenly on December 17, 2025, at the age of 75, following a courageous battle with cancer.

A lifelong resident of Eaton, N.H., Carroll was born on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1950, to Leslie T. and Mary M. Shackford. He grew up in the Shackford neighborhood alongside his siblings, Paul, Edward and Pauline, forming deep roots in the community he loved.

Carroll was educated at Eaton Elementary School and graduated from Kennett High School in 1968. A passionate outdoorsman, he spent much of his life skiing, fishing and hunting. Many of his fondest memories were made exploring the streams, mountains, and woods of Eaton with his father, brothers and friends — experiences that fostered his lifelong respect for nature.

This connection to the land led Carroll to a career as a logger. As the owner of his own logging business, he was known for his strength, skill, and determination. He took quiet pride in his demanding work, earning a reputation as a hardworking man with a kind and gentle nature.

A fixture in his community, Carroll enjoyed the simple pleasures of small-town life. He was a familiar face at the Eaton Village Store, where he loved catching up with neighbors and sharing stories. Above all, he cherished his close friendships and his family.

Carroll shared many happy years with his significant other, Gail Whittier, in a home built by his brother, Edward. Together, they enjoyed caring for their Maine coon cats and watching the local wildlife that came to their yard. Carroll and Gail supported each other through their respective health challenges with remarkable resilience until Gail’s passing in March 2025.

Carroll lived life on his own terms and will be remembered for his independence, warm humor, and infectious smile. He is deeply missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of Carroll’s life will be held alongside his brother, Edward, on Sunday, May 17, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. in the families' back pasture.
