Charles Hunter Jr. Obituary

Charles L. Hunter Jr., died peacefully at Mountain View Community on Friday January 5, 2024 with his daughters by his side.

He was born in Teaneck, NJ on July 22, 1929, the son of Elizabeth and Charles Hunter. Charles was raised in Natick, MA where he graduated from Natick High School. He was proud of his first job at the Harwood & Sons Baseball Factory where he sewed baseballs and was paid a nickel apiece. Later he worked as a bagger at A & P Tea Co. in downtown Natick. After high school he continued working for A & P and, after many promotions, eventually became the vice president and general manager of the Springfield division.

Charlie was a true family man. He married his first wife, Pat, on Sept. 6, 1952. They had three daughters - Debbie, Sally, and Nancy. Charlie loved gardening and kept vegetable and flower gardens. He was an excellent cook, often making Sunday dinners and holiday meals. He made the best meatloaf dinners!

At the age of 50, Charlie decided to make a change in his life. With the support of his wife Pat, he and his family moved to Wolfeboro, NH and opened Hunter’s IGA in July of 1979. He loved his store, working hard to make it successful and welcoming to the people in his new home town. Charlie was involved in the community as a director for the Kingswood Bank & Trust and the Chamber of Commerce. He also served as a trustee for the Wolfeboro Area Children’s Center and was an incorporator of the Community Bank & Trust. He was honored to receive both the General Wolfe Award and the Paul Harris Fellowship Award for his good work in the town he loved.

After Pat’s passing in 1988, he married his second wife, Jane. They had many years together, happily spending the winters in Naples, FL and the summer in Wolfeboro.

During the past five years, Charlie resided at the Mountain View Community where he received exceptionally warm and compassionate care.

He leaves behind his daughters Debbie Lafleur and her husband Andy, Sally Hunter and her partner Sue, his brother Jerry Hunter and sister-in-law Susan, grandchildren Caitlin Jones and her husband Ian, Casey Randall and her husband Brendan and great-grandchildren Audrey and Andrew and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wives Pat and Jane, his daughter Nancy, and his sister Betty Lee Lentini.

There will be no calling hours. A funeral mass will be held at St. Katherine Drexel, 40 Hidden Springs Road, Alton, NH 03809 on Saturday January 20, 2024, at 10:00 am. A reception will follow at the church in the fellowship hall. The internment will be held in May.

Please consider making a memorial donation in Charlie’s name to Mountain View Community Activity Fund at 93 Water Village Rd. Ossipee, NH 03864.
