James Pitts Obituary

James Atwater Pitts of Exeter and Wolfeboro, NH. passed away on Wednesday October 19, 2022. 

Beloved husband of Noreen (Kiggins) Pitts of Exeter and Wolfeboro, NH. Devoted father of Paul J. Pitts, and his wife Helen of Vero Beach, FL, Andrew J. Pitts and his wife Kirsten of Greenwich, CT and Melvin Village, NH and Sarah E. (Pitts) Wieland and her husband Peter of Concord, MA. Loving Grandfather of seven grandchildren including Catherine, Samuel and Sophia Pitts, Lindsey and Laurel Pitts and Ashley and Caroline Wieland.  

 Mr. Pitts was born in Greenwich, CT and was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School. He was an honor graduate of Niagara University and received his MBA from the University of Connecticut. In addition, he is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School and the International Management Institute in Geneva, Switzerland. Jim was the former Chief Investment Officer, CFO and Treasurer of the Boston Foundation.  He also served as the Executive Vice President and CFO of Clean Harbors, Inc as well as the CFO of Bain and Company. Jim also advised to the Boards of The Boston Foundation, Clean Harbors, BostonCoach, Bain and Cullinet.  Jim was a Director of Wainwright Bank and Trust Company, a Director of Macquarie Asset Management, a Director of the Children’s Museum in Boston and the Lakes Region Conservation Trust.  Jim was on the Board and Treasurer of the Harvard Business School Alumni Association of Boston. He had been a Director of the National Association of Corporate Directors New England Chapter, chaired the Audit committee and until 2019 was a Member of its Senior Advisory Board.

 Jim was a true philanthropist and always enjoyed giving back to his community.  While raising his family in Sudbury, he served on the Board of Selectmen and was the Chair of the Finance Committee for the Town of Sudbury, MA. Jim served as the former Treasurer and President of Springfield Point Association. Jim was currently serving as Chair of the Resident Council at RiverWoods, Exeter, NH.   

Jim’s service in the U.S. Army Reserve for over 35 years culminated in the rank of Colonel and included a tour of Duty in Operation Desert Storm.

 He enjoyed winters in Boston on Beacon Hill and spending the summers in Wolfeboro on Lake Winnipesaukee for the past 40 years. Jim and Noreen also spent many years vacationing in Naples and enjoyed having grandchildren visit for extended periods.  He cherished his family and most enjoyed his evening sunset cruises from Springfield Point in Wolfeboro.  He will be missed by all who knew him.

 A private memorial service will be held.
