James D Spencer, 71, of Ossipee died peacefully at home on Saturday, August 12, 2023, after a long illness. He was born in Springfield, Vermont, to Ivan and Hazel (Dickinson) Spencer. He graduated from Springfield High School and later Vermont Technical College, where he was active with the college radio station and met his future wife, Cynthia. They raised their family in Pelham NH.
Soon after college graduation Jim went to work for Wang Labs for 20 years first in Tewksbury, MA then later the towers in Lowell, MA rising to become a senior diagnostic software engineer. He was also active in the local ham radio club and volunteered as a spotter for the Wang Heart Run and the Tour de Lowell. After leaving Wang, Jim worked for ATI Systems in East Boston, and then Cabletron Systems in Nashua, NH. He was later transferred to Cabletron in Rochester, NH, from which he eventually retired. It was at this time the family moved to Ossipee, NH.
After moving to Ossipee, Jim volunteered many hours for his community; he was awarded a lifetime membership of the Ossipee Historical Society and was the caretaker for the historic Carroll County Courthouse. He was also elected to several terms as a commissioner of the Ossipee Corner Fire Department and was appointed as a member of the Ossipee Budget Committee. Jim enjoyed time with his family, gardening, and the outdoors.
Jim is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Cynthia (White) Spencer, and his daughters Valerie Custeau and her husband Eli, and Rebecca Spencer and her husband Christopher Dustin. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Yazzi Laster and her husband Noah, Julie Custeau, Frank Custeau Jr, Stella Friesen, and Amelia Custeau, and a great-granddaughter Lylah Laster. He was predeceased by his parents, and by a great-granddaughter, Charlotte Ford.
Visiting hours for Jim will be on Thursday, August 24, 2023, from 5-7 PM at Lord Funeral Home, 23 Club Lane, Wolfeboro, NH.
Funeral services will be held at the Lord Funeral Home, 23 Club Lane, Wolfeboro, NH on Friday, August 25, 2023, at 2 PM with Pastor Marc Swenson officiating. Burial will follow at the Riverside Cemetery in Tamworth.
