Leona Fickinger Obituary

Heaven recently welcomed a small but mighty package with the passing of Leona (Lee) Fickinger, or “Little Bit”, as she was affectionately known by some. Lee passed from this earth on Friday, March 27, 2026, surrounded by loving family. In the century plus she was with us, she lived her life with love. Love of God, love of family, love of friends, love of flowers, and love of life.

Lee was born on July 24, 1924 in Greenwich, CT. When she was a young child, her family moved to a farm in Scotland, CT, where she lived through the Great Depression, the death of her father, and other hardships. She was a pillar of support to her mother during these times, and when things improved, she left to pursue a job at ABC in New York City. Upon returning home, she met the love of her life, Bill Fickinger. They married, had a daughter, and built their first home in Storrs, CT. Lee worked at UConn for a number of years, where she began as head of payroll before a promotion to working for the president. These were jobs she took pride in and truly loved.

Upon her husband’s retirement, the family moved to Wolfeboro, NH, where they had vacationed for many years, and where Lee immersed herself in Lake Life. Not ready to retire, she obtained her realtors license and spent many happy years with Maxfield Real Estate. This was another job she relished. She was also engaged in Newcomers Club and other community activities.

Lee is survived by her daughter Kathy, whom she loved dearly. Other survivors are her cherished nieces, great nieces and nephews, and devoted friends. In addition to her father, John, she was preceded in death by her loving husband Bill, her beloved mother, Margaret, her siblings, Mary, Blanche, Ann, Valeria, James, Stanley, and John, and many nieces and friends.

The family would like to sincerely thank Lee’s caregivers, Bonnie, Julie, Jen, and Jade who so kindly and compassionately cared for her at the end of her life. A special thank you also to Maryann Murray, who was instrumental in navigating all the ins and outs of Lee’s care and communicating with family members to keep them informed.

A mass of Christian burial and celebration of life will be held on April 18, 2026 at 10:30 AM at Saint Katharine Drexel Church, Alton, NH.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to Granite VNA, 645 South Main Street, Wolfeboro, NH, 03894.
