Lyle Thurston Obituary

Lyle C. Thurston (86) of Effingham died peacefully on July 25, 2024 in Dover at Wentworth-Douglas Hospital with his family by his side. He was the son of Clifton and Zelma (Nutter) Thurston. Born January 6, 1938, in Porter, Maine. He went to grade school at the Little Red School in Effingham Falls (Next to the church). Graduated from Kennett High School in Conway. While in high school he joined the Army National Guard in Wolfeboro, where he served 1-1/2 years before entering the U.S. Navy and served for four years aboard the USS Kepler DDE 765 and attained the rank of Electricians Mate Second Class. In the service he earned the Carbine Marksman Badge and the Good Conduct Medal.

After the service he worked in Wolfeboro for Lakeview Oil for many years as an Electrician and Plumber. Then drove an oil delivery truck in the winters. He was a meat cutter for Country Smoke House in Wolfeboro, Rich Plan Foods in Pittsfield and Hickeys Store in Center Ossipee. He started his own Electrical and Plumbing business in 1974. He also owned Route 25 Public Storage in Effingham.

He married Helena (Joey) Jutras of Wolfeboro in 1962. Together they raised four sons Scott, Wayne, Bryan and John. They have 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. They owned a home in Wolfeboro and lived there for 28 years before moving to Effingham in 1990. He served the Town of Effingham with 2 years as a Cemetery Trustee, 6 years on the Conservation Commission, 9 years on the Zoning Board of Adjustment with 8 of them as the chairman. Now a Cemetery Trustee since 2011 for the Effingham Falls Cemetery.  

Even though he was not eligible to join the American Legion, he worked many years for and with the members in Little League Baseball (as an umpire), at the kids skating parties, the fishing derbies and marching in parades. He joined the Masons at Morning Star Lodge in Wolfeboro in 1974, then joined Carroll Royal Arch Chapter, New Hampshire Consistory and became a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Bektash Shriner, Bektash Mini Cars and Bektash Stewards Unit. He later transferred Ossipee Valley Lodge of Masons in Ossipee and to Signet Royal Arch Chapter in North Conway. He was a Charter Member, Past President and Past Secretary of Simadi Shrine Club. Member of York County Shrine Club in Maine.

He enjoyed going to Aruba, Wells Beach, Maine and eating lobster. He was an avid wood turner and made many attractive and useful items on his wood lathe.  

He was predeceased by both parents, a brother Clyde at one year of age and a son Wayne in 2020.  

Calling hours will be on Thursday August 1st at Lord Funeral Home in Center Ossipee, NH from 6 to 8 PM. Graveside Services and internment will be at the Effingham Falls Cemetery Friday August 2nd at 11AM.
