Mary Bridgette Travis 87 of Effingham Road in Ossipee, NH passed away at Maine Medical Center on November 21, 2023 after a long struggle with type two diabetes. Born at the homestead on May 30, 1936 to Bernard and Margaret Whyte of Clonakilla Beal na Mulla Athlone Ireland, she was the oldest of four children. Predeceased by her parents, her brother Tommy, and her husband Sherman, she is survived by her sisters, Margaret Whyte, and Kathleen Odea of Ireland.
Mary emigrated to the United States in 1969 coming over “on the boat“ as she would say. She became a naturalized citizen and met Sherman Travis who was the love of her life. They settled in New Hampshire in 1975. Mary loved the change of seasons in New England and thought that New Hampshire was the most beautiful place to live. They enjoyed spending their time camping, boating and snowmobiling. She was widowed in 2004.
An avid reader, Mary devoured everything in print from novels to the sale flyers that came in the paper. She liked to discuss current events and enjoyed swapping periodicals with her friends and neighbors. A member of The Second Congregational Church, she looked forward to seeing her friends and fellow parishioners every week. She will be missed dearly by her church family. She enjoyed working outside in her yard, and taking long walks in the State Forest with her companion and caregiver Melissa. She was always up for an adventure in the car, and it didn’t matter where she was going. Mary adored and spoiled her pets and leaves behind a cat and dog who miss her terribly.
There will be a graveside service at the Woodland Cemetery in Effingham, New Hampshire on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at 11 AM when she will be laid to rest with her husband. A memorial service will be held at the Second Congregational Church in Ossipee, New Hampshire on December 16, 2023 at 11 AM.
