Nancy Knowlton Pascoe, a long-term resident of Freedom and West Ossipee, NH, passed away on Thursday September 21, 2023. Nancy was born on January 4, 1928 in Boston, MA to James and Esther Knowlton.
After graduating from Belmont High School, she attended Green Mountain College in Poultney, VT. In May 1949 Nancy married Richard Pascoe of West Ossipee, NH. She and her husband operated Shawtown Campground in Freedom, NH for 24 years. The campground first opened in the early sixties with 23 sites, and eventually grew to over 300, all cleared by the Pascoe’s themselves. Nancy worked hard with Dick during those years.
She was a quiet force alongside her husband, tending the books, planning coffee hours, magic shows, quilting bees and potluck dinners, as well as keeping her own family well fed and cared for. The thoughtfully constructed campsites at Shawtown became a welcoming place where families returned from year to year, and led to numerous long-lasting friendships.
Nancy loved cooking and entertaining, and hosted many dinner parties and luncheons over the years. She enjoyed good food, and after retiring she and Dick traveled extensively, often going out of their way to try new restaurants. Their travels took them all over the United States and to multiple countries around the world. Her other interests included quilting, reading and spending time with family and friends. Nancy continually welcomed guests into her home, whether it was for a casual morning coffee or a fine dinner. She always set a beautiful table, many times days before an upcoming occasion.
Throughout life she delighted in dancing, both in her earlier years at the Totem Pole Ballroom, and later moving to the sound of Lawrence Welk in her living room. Even at age 95 she kept her rhythm alive, entertaining residents and staff at Spring Village at Dover.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Pascoe, and her sister, Sally Robinson.
She is survived by her son Steven Pascoe, and wife Suzanne of Amherst, NH, daughter Susan Noreen, and husband Scott of Gunnison, CO, daughter Sally Cooper and husband Barry of Boxford, MA, seven grandchildren, Kimberly Pascoe, Sean Pascoe, Brittany MacArthur, Kevin Noreen, Jennie Omasta, Ross Cooper and Jeff Cooper, seven great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
There will be a private graveside service at a later date. Lord Funeral Home, located in Center Ossipee, NH is in charge of the arrangements, www.lordfuneralhome.com.
