Neil Eric Potter Obituary
Neil Eric Potter, 89, passed away on Palm Sunday, March 29, 2026.
Eric was born on August 11, 1936, in Wolfeboro, NH, to the late Harold Taylor Potter and Caroline Alice Potter. He was predeceased by his infant son, Benjamin Daniel Potter, who is now at peace in the arms of the Lord and forever held in the hearts of his family.
He was the beloved husband of June Winifred (Smith) Potter, with whom he shared nearly 61 years of marriage—a partnership defined by deep love, dedication, and unwavering support.
Eric is survived by his children, Amy Louise (Potter) Durell and her husband Scott Durell of Troy, NH; and Roger Harold Potter and his partner Melissa Geschwindner of Concord, NH. He is also survived by his siblings, Mary Potter Andrews of Troy, NH, and Paul David Potter and his wife Deborah (Goodwin) Potter of Effingham, NH.
Eric graduated from Kennett High School and went on to Plymouth State College, where he earned his degree in Education. Early in his teaching career, he met June, beginning the lifelong journey they shared together.
He made Shelburne Falls, MA, the center of his professional life. Eric began his teaching career at Arms Academy and later became a founding educator at Mohawk Trail Regional School when it opened in 1967. He taught there until his retirement in 2000.
Mr. Potter was far more than a teacher. He was a mentor, a steady presence, and a source of inspiration to generations of students. Known for his booming voice and strong discipline, he was equally known for his compassion. He served as a confidant and guide to students, colleagues, and all who knew him, challenging those around him to be their best and leaving a lasting impact on countless lives.
While his work was in Massachusetts, Eric’s heart always belonged to Center Effingham, NH, where his family’s roots run deep. He had a deep knowledge of the town’s history and took great joy in sharing it with others. He was a pillar of the Center Effingham Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as a deacon.
A service to celebrate Eric’s life will be held on April 18, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at the Center Effingham Baptist Church, followed by burial in the family cemetery at the homestead. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the church to share memories and celebrate his life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Center Effingham Baptist Church Deacons Fund or to the Effingham Town Assistance Fund.
Eric will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
