Patricia Ruth (Howie) Cookson passed away at her home in Tuftonboro, NH October 13, 2025 surrounded by members of her loving family after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. Pat was born in Ware, MA July 31, 1933 and is predeceased by her parents John R Howie and Madeline Francis Howie, and 4 brothers and sisters.
Pat graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Middletown, CT in 1951. She he had many friends in school and was Captain of the Cheer Leader Team, Freshman Class Vice President, and Member of the Student Government.
During the summer of her graduation, she met a boy named Ken who was to become her husband of 72 years. Pat went to work at Travelers Insurance Company in Hartford, CT and was selected to be a Hostess for visiting guests and officials in addition to her regular job. When a National Magazine (McCall's) visited Travelers to find a subject for a feature article on working women, Pat was selected from among the 1200 young women employed there. After seeing Pat and Ken together, the Article became "Love Story" and was published in the October 1953 issue of McCall's. Pat loved showing the now tattered magazine to visitors.
Pat and Ken were married October 31, 1953 and moved to Salem MA. Other career moves over the years took them to Hamilton MA, Milford CT, New Hartford NY, and Monroe CT. Pat was active in various ways in each community, including Cub Scout Den Mother, Nursing Home Board of Directors, Parent Teacher Organizations, Historical Society, and some politics.
After retirement Pat and Ken moved to Tuftonboro, NH. Pat had always been active in the community where they lived, and so joined New Comers, Hikers, and PEO where she served as an officer including a term as president in all three. Pat made many friends but particularly enjoyed going to lunch with a small group of special friends on their birthday or other special occasion.
Pat loved people and people were attracted to her by her warm and sincere personality. She always had a special place in her heart for her four sons, John, Douglas, David and Thomas, and her sister Kathy Howie. In addition, she loved and enjoyed her eight grand children and eight great grandchildren. Pat was a skilled cook and baker and liked to bake cookies for the kids. Christmas was her favorite holiday and for years she sent Advent Calendars to the grand children in November and a box of cookies to each one on Christmas.
Pat and her family wish to thank the Hospice Team of the Lakes Region V. N. A. for their many months of loving care that allowed us to keep Pat at home where she wanted to be.
