Pauline H. “Polly” Smith of Wolfeboro passed away peacefully May 27, 2025, at her home, surrounded by her family. Polly was born Sept. 7, 1932, in Lynn, Massachusetts, the daughter of Francis N. Haley and Grace (Smith) Haley.
Polly met her soulmate, Charlie, but couldn’t remember whether it was in Lynn or Wolfeboro.
She grew up in East Lynn, near Flax Pond. His father was the minister at Boston Street Methodist Church in West Lynn. She graduated from Lynn English High School and he graduated from Lynn Classical High School. She spent summers at the family camp on Lake Wentworth in Wolfeboro, built by her grandfather in 1913. He summered with his family at their camp on Triggs Shore, a stone’s throw away. Lake Wentworth was always the most special place for both of them.
Following graduation as a Registered Nurse from Salem Hospital School of Nursing, Salem, Ma., the couple married. They were later blessed by the birth of a baby girl, Cynthia. A few years later, they had a second daughter, Cheryl.
After retirement from working 40 years as a R.N. at Salem Hospital, she and her husband Charlie retired to Greenville, N.H. to be nearer to their daughter Cynthia. Following the death of her husband and some challenging health issues a few years ago, Polly moved into the home of her daughter Cheryl and her husband Tom and her brother Grant. She became a year-long Wolfeboro resident.
Polly will be remembered for her generosity and ready smile. She was a true friend. She was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Lynn and All Saints Episcopal Church in Wolfeboro. With her husband, she was a life-long member of the Order of Eastern Star in Lynn. In 1963 they served as Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron and maintained life-long friendships.
She was predeceased by her parents Francis N. Haley and Grace (Smith) Haley, her husband Charles Q. Smith and brother Grant Haley. She was also predeceased by a sister-in-law Elizabeth B. Smith and brother-in-laws Emerson S. Dresser and Rev. H. Allen Tadgell, Jr. She leaves two daughters, Cheryl and husband Tom McCarriston, and Cynthia Korsman. She also leaves a granddaughter April and her husband Jake Van Malden and their son Grant. In addition, she leaves three grandsons Jason Legro; Daniel Legro and wife Debra and their son Dalen; and Joshua Korsman.
In addition, she leaves sisters-in-law Dorothy Jean Dresser and Joyce Tadgell, and two nieces Martha Harris and husband Whitney, and Kim Marchand and husband Bob. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.
A memorial celebration will be held Saturday, July 26, at 11 a.m. at the All Saints Episcopal Church, 258 South Main Street, Wolfeboro, NH. A committal service will follow in the Memorial Garden at the Church. There will be a gathering in the parish hall.
