Robert Hyde Strough, 78, a devoted husband, father, son and veteran, passed away on 3/30/2026.
Born on May 6, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio, Robert (Bob) was the beloved son of the late Robert and Katherine Strough. He grew up in Glastonbury, CT where he met his beloved wife of 55 years, Elizabeth (Libby). He was a graduate of Kingswood Oxford School in West Hartford, CT (Class of 1965) and Hobart College (Class of 1969), where he began a lifelong pursuit of technical knowledge and excellence. Later, he went on to earn an MBA from the University of Hartford.
Bob’s dedication to aerospace began with his service in the United States Air Force from 1969 to 1973 where he achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. His duties took him from the northern landscape of Loring Air Force Base in Maine to the strategic post of Andersen Air Base in Guam.
Following his military service, Bob turned his passion for engines into a distinguished 31-year career at Pratt & Whitney. As a specialist in jet engine sales, he was a respected figure in the industry, known for his technical expertise and his pride in knowing he helped power the world’s most advanced aircraft.
Bob’s favorite place to be was on the water. A veteran of multiple Newport to Bermuda regattas and other long distance sailing adventures, he was a skilled sailor who embraced the challenge of navigating the open ocean.
Believing in the importance of safety and tradition, Bob volunteered his time with the Power Squadron, where he taught basic seamanship to a new generation of boaters. In his later years, he served on the Board of the Wolfeboro Corinthian Yacht Club. Following that, he served on the board of the New Hampshire Boat Museum and volunteered extensively to assist in guaranteeing the viability and success of the ‘new’ New Hampshire Boat Museum in Moultonborough, and thus ensuring that maritime history was preserved for the future.
When he wasn’t on the water, Bob was often found among friends at local events like Cars and Coffee in the Wolfeboro area, sharing his love for classic automotive engineering.
Above all his accomplishments, Bob was a family man. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth Strough and the proud father of Jonathan Strough. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Meghan Strough, and his cherished grandchildren, Caroline and Riley Strough, who brought him immense joy. He also leaves behind his brother, Frederick Strough, and a wide circle of other family and friends.
There will be a Celebration of Life in the Wolfeboro, NH area later in the Spring.
