It is with great sadness that the family of Robert (Bob) Bruce McDowell announces his passing on March 17, 2025, at the age of 71, after complications from a cardiac condition.
Bob was born on December 2, 1953, in Penn Yan, New York, and grew up in the town of Wolcott, New York. He was an Eagle Scout and graduated from North Rose-Wolcott High School in 1972, where he excelled in soccer, cross-country running and formed lasting friendships. Bob continued his education at Syracuse University and later earned an associate degree in environmental science from Southern Vermont College.
A man of deep commitment to service, Bob proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1983 to 1989. His distinguished service earned him an honorable discharge along with several honors and awards, including the Good Conduct Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Battle "E" Efficiency Award, and the Meritorious Unit Commendation.
After leaving the Navy, Bob had a successful career with Raytheon, retiring in 2017 after 28 years of dedicated work in the defense industry. He was a certified NATO SEASPARROW Surface Missile System technician as well as an AEGIS Weapon System technician, contributing significantly to military defense systems during his time of service.
His expertise and contributions in this field were widely respected by his colleagues and peers.
Bob’s personal life was just as rich and fulfilling. In 2003, he married the love of his life, Missy Durkee McDowell, and together they shared many years of joy and adventure. Bob was a loving husband, brother and friend, always eager to lend a helping hand or share a smile. He had a passion for the outdoors and enjoyed spending time with family and friends in the scenic beauty of New Hampshire, where he and Missy made their home.
Bob was deeply proud of his family and friends, and he leaves behind a legacy of kindness, integrity, and service. He is survived by his beloved wife, Missy McDowell; his sister, Linda Hill of Nebraska; sister Coral Pennetti and her husband Jim Pennetti of Ohio; sister Sally Roberts of Woolcott, NY; brothers in law and family, Forrest J. Durkee, Robert and Nora Durkee, and W.J. Paul Durkee; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
A memorial service to honor Bob’s life will be held on March 28, 2025, at 3:00pm at Lord Funeral Home, 23 Club Lane, Wolfeboro, NH.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Department of Veteran Affairs, St Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and United Service Organization (USO) in Bob's memory.
Bob's legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed and always remembered.
