Roy Eldridge, 93 of Center Ossipee passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at his home with family by his side.
Roy was a native and life-long resident of Ossipee. He was born August 21, 1926 the son of the late Chester and Hazel Eldridge at their home on Eldridge Mountain.
Roy was a World War II veteran joining the US Navy at the age of 17 and had served on the AMLC – 140 Landing Craft in Normandy. After serving in the Navy he returned home and worked for the New Hampshire Fish & Game for over 32 years at the Summer Brook Fish Hatchery in Ossipee. Fifteen of those years he served as Superintendent. He also served as a Deputy Game Warden for the State of NH.
After retiring and needing to keep busy he worked for the OHRV, grooming trails. He also worked at White Lake State Park, Tamworth NH and Castle-in-the-Clouds, Moultonborough, NH.
For 35 years he proudly placed the American Flag on the graves of Veterans in Ossipee, taking on the honor from his father-in-law, George Campbell of Center Ossipee, NH.
In 2018 he was named Citizen of the Year for the Town of Ossipee, NH. Roy had a great love of nature and he had many hobbies including gardening, hiking, wood working, fishing, art and raising turkeys. For years he donated turkeys to the Ossipee Concerned Citizens and the Ossipee Corner Fire Department.
He found great enjoyment in sharing produce from his gardens or his mushrooms he found in the forest with his family, friends and neighbors.
Roy was predeceased by his wife of 60 years Jean (Campbell) Eldridge, his daughter Elaine Clancy Levine and sons Chester, George and Stephen and his grandchildren Jessica Nelson and Matthew Eldridge.
He is survived by his four children, Jim Eldridge, Gloria Hoag, Michael Eldridge and Ruthann Nelson as well as 23 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
A private family service will be held in the family cemetery on Eldridge Mountain in the spring.
