Ruth Hansen Obituary

Hansen, Ruth Holden

It is with great sadness we share the loss of Ruth Holden Hansen, 94, of Melvin Village, formerly of Darien, CT.  Ruth passed away at her home surrounded by family on Friday January 21, 2022. Ruth was born on August 5, 1927 to the late John S. Holden and Hilda Carpenter Holden in Attleboro, MA.  She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Niel S. Hansen (of 68 years) and beloved brother, John S. Holden, Jr.

Ruth graduated from Walnut Hill School in 1945 and Grinnell College in 1949.  She and Niel were married in 1948.  They brought up their daughters in Darien.  Family always came first for Ruth.  She was a fulltime mother, while also always volunteering her time.  She was a Girl Scout leader, chairman of the elementary school library, a member of the standing committee for the junior and senior high schools and was on the Council of Student Parents.  She was the treasurer for the Darien VNA and the Stamford Home Health Aides and volunteered for Meals on Wheels.  She served as treasurer of the Women’s Association Board of Stewards at the First Congregational Church of Darien.

In 1988, Ruth and Niel retired to their Melvin Village home where they had been vacationing since 1973.  She volunteered for the local Meals on Wheels, the Tuftonboro Waste Committee, the Tuftonboro Cemetery Committee and Bicentennial Committee. She was dedicated to the Melvin Village Community Church and the Hikers.

Ruth and Niel loved to travel. They traveled the country, particularly enjoying the national parks and internationally, they visited Europe, Scotland, Wales, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Russia.

Ruth enjoyed knitting, skiing, tennis, kayaking and most of all, living on the lake and watching the loons.

Ruth is survived by her two daughters; Karen Hansen (Alan Higgs) of Daytona Beach, FL and Jane Morgan of Melvin Village, four grandchildren; Christopher, Scott, Jeffrey and Abbie and four great grandchildren.  She also leaves behind many loved extended members of her family.

Ruth was so loved by family and friends and will be missed tremendously.

At her request, there will be no calling hours and a private celebration of life will be held by family.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ruth’s name to the Tuftonboro Firefighters Association, PO Box 437, Melvin Village, NH, the Lakes Region Humane Society of Ossipee or a charity of your choice.
