Samuel "Phil" Wasmuth Obituary

Samuel “Phil” Wasmuth, age 77 passed away in his home in Wolfeboro, NH unexpectedly on Thursday, January 25, 2018.  He was born in Huntington, IN on April 30, 1940 to the son of the late Samuel and Delene (Lobdell) Wasmuth. He attended Huntington High School, Hanover College, and then Butler University where he received his Master’s degree.  He lived in Los Angeles, CA where he taught biology at Freemont High School. He later moved to Columbus, IN where he was a track coach and substance abuse counselor at Columbus North High School. He settled in Wolfeboro, NH where he was the athletic director for Kingswood Regional High School. Although he loved living in the Granite State, he was always a Hoosier at heart.

Phil was well known throughout the Wolfeboro community. His cheerfulness, positive attitude, enthusiasm, and love for his family and friends were always on display.  He took on many roles at All Saints Church in Wolfeboro where he was a devoted parishioner that included Eucharistic Minister, Editor of E-News, and served on the vestry.  He was an active volunteer in Caregivers of Southern Carroll County and served as the treasurer. He delighted in driving people to medical appointments and playing music that they enjoyed.

Phil had many hobbies and took life on as an adventure. In his younger years he completed over 10 marathons, including Boston and New York. He continued his active lifestyle as the years went on and was an avid hiker and completed all of the 4,000 footers in NH. He loved Lake Winnipesaukee and his Canopache Lodge where so many memories were made.  He enjoyed bringing family and friends out for boat rides and going for early morning fishing trips.  He was a phenomenal photographer and was always taking pictures at every family event or outing.  His camera never left his side.  Phil and his beloved wife, Dianne, enjoyed discovering the world and traveling to many places including:  Africa, Europe, The South Seas, Costa Rica, and The Grand Canyon. He had a passion for birding and his deck was surrounded by many different types of feeders that he would tend to daily. He was an avid sports fan and would watch and discuss the stats with whoever would listen.  Politics were also a big conversation piece for Phil. He wasn’t shy about his political views and enjoyed a healthy and spirited conversation.

He is survived by his two sons, Doug Wasmuth of Montera, CA, Craig Wasmuth and wife Sharon of Columbus, IN and their mother Sara Wasmuth of Columbus, IN. He is also survived by his wife Dianne , stepdaughters Courtney Silva and husband Matthew  of Dover, NH and  Heather Lynch and husband Christopher of Dover, NH, sister Sara Paul and husband Kent of Fort Wayne, IN, and brother-in-law Max Risser of Huntington, IN.  He had several nieces, nephews, and other relatives that were dear to him. He was blessed with 12 grandchildren who were the light of his life:  Dylan, Andrew, Hannah, Zeppelin, Jackie, Sam, Leo, Alexis, Carter, Erin, Kathleen, and Reagan.
