Steven Elton Metz of Melvin Village, NH passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 13, 2025, after a brief illness. Steve was born on July 25, 1946, in North Attleboro, MA to Elton and Marjorie (Laporte) Metz and had a brother, Richard, who predeceased him.
From his childhood home in Massachusetts, he went on to Lyndon State College, VT, where he met the love of his life, Norma. He completed a Masters in Education at the University of Maine which launched a 40-year career teaching high school math in various places like Long Island, NY, Wolfeboro and Belmont NH, Sweden, and finishing in Laconia, NH.
Steve and his wife, Norma (Grant) celebrated 55 years of marriage last summer. He had a quiet sense of humor with an easy-going attitude. He always quoted, “If you can’t laugh, what’s left”. He believed that was one component that made their marriage work. They have two daughters, Rebecca (Robert) of Rochester, NH and Gretchen of Somersworth, NH.
Metzie, as Steve was widely known, loved sports and outdoor activities, such as kayaking/canoeing/sailing, tennis, golf, and pickleball. In his younger years, he volunteered for the Tuftonboro Fire Department and fought forest fires out West. He refereed high school and college soccer and lacrosse for many years. In their retirement they enjoyed traveling across the country in their camper, touring Europe, and wintering in Arcadia, Florida so he didn’t have to “shovel that white stuff” anymore.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Tuftonboro Conservation Commission - Conservation Fund as Steve volunteered with the Great Meadow project, or the Tuftonboro Free Library as he was an avid reader. Checks can be mailed to the Town of Tuftonboro, P.O. Box 407 Melvin Village, NH 03850, with your preference in the memo.
To honor Steve, a Celebration of Life will be held at the First Congregational Church, 115 South Main Street, Wolfeboro, NH at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 3, 2025, with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall.
