Susan Postlewaite of Center Sandwich, NH died Tuesday June 16, 2026, after battling a long illness at the Taylor Community in Wolfeboro, NH. Susan was born in Norwalk, CT in 1950, and spent her childhood wintering in Wilton, CT, and summering in Holderness, NH. The Postlewaite family then fully relocated to North Sandwich in 1969 after Susan graduated from Wilton High School. She became a devoted NH transplant from then on.

Susan was a skilled editor, journalist, media trainer, and professor. She had known from a young age she wanted to write. Upon graduating from Lake Forest College in 1972 she began her career in journalism, writing for the Carroll County Independent in Wolfeboro, NH and The Caledonia Record in St. Johnsbury, VT. Her path eventually took her to Miami, where she worked as Managing Editor for the Daily Business Review and the Miami Herald, and finally became a correspondent for Bloomberg BusinessWeek and The Associated Press.

Susan met her husband Mike Fowler, an editor, while in Florida. An ambitious couple, Susan eventually obtained her Master’s Degree in Business Administration while Mike obtained his Juris Doctor degree focusing on the First Amendment and became a member of the Florida Bar. Armed with these, they looked to the rest of the world for opportunity. First spending time in Alaska, the couple then started a long journey of globetrotting professionalism, both becoming adjunct as well as full time professors and Knight Fellows, Mike also becoming a journalism advisor with law experience in Rwanda and Cambodia.

Susan and Mike worked at the American University of Cairo in Egypt, Business Week Cairo, The Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media in Bangalore, and The American University in Bulgaria before they landed in Phnom Penh Cambodia to teach young journalists and cover the Khmer Rouge Tribunal for Associated Press. Both were in the process of writing a novel as well.

Whilst in Cambodia the couple decided to adopt a child, and found Kim, their daughter. Around this time, the couple bought a house in North Sandwich that would become their home base between school years abroad.

In 2008 Susan’s beloved Mike died unexpectedly, leaving Susan and Kim to spend school years and summers between Stuart, FL and North Sandwich, NH respectively. During this time, Susan continued her storied career as an editor of the Afghan Women’s Writing Project, traveling there occasionally herself. Kim graduated from Inter-Lakes High School in 2019 and, around this time, Susan began to develop symptoms of the illness that took her life. She moved to Center Sandwich, before ultimately residing at the Taylor Community of Wolfeboro.

Susan leaves behind her daughter, Kim Fowler, sister Ellen Postlewaite, brother Neil Postlewaite and spouse Kimberly Loeschner, as well many more family members throughout the states, and a myriad of dear friends throughout the world. Many thanks to the caring staff at the Taylor Community and the many friends who supported her through her illness.

Her memorial service will be held on July 18, 2026 at 12:30 pm at the North Sandwich Friends Meeting House, North Sandwich, NH. In lieu of flowers donations in Susan’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of New Hampshire or the Samuel H. Wentworth Library of Sandwich, NH.
