Thomas William Duncan, age 83, of Wolfeboro, NH, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was a devoted family man, respected finance professional, and generous philanthropist.

Tom was born in Jersey City, NJ on February 26, 1943, the eldest of 7 children born to Tom and Mary Duncan. As the oldest, he naturally stepped into the role of leader and role model. He spent his childhood in Jersey City and summers at Lake Shawnee where he met his wife, Mariana Buckley. He graduated from St. Peter’s College with a degree in Economics and later served on the Board of Trustees and Finance Committee and was a generous benefactor to the College. He went on to earn his MBA from Harvard Business School in1969.

Tom built a highly distinguished 40 year career as a portfolio manager, specializing in small cap growth stocks. He managed money for some of the largest Fortune 500 companies and other institutions. He joined Frontier Capital management in the early 80s and went on to become the President in 1990 before retiring in 2010. He was admired and respected by his colleagues and employees for his sharp mind, integrity and leadership. He was known to evaluate companies shrewdly and would ask if the CEO was impressive and non-promotional, two characteristics that he embodied most.

On July 9, 1966 he married Mariana. Together, they raised 2 children, Tom and Patty in Sudbury, MA. He had a fierce competitive spirit and enjoyed coaching both baseball and softball for his children as well as running many pick-up games of basketball in the driveway with the neighbors. Tom was active in the community serving as head of the finance committee for the Town of Sudbury. When their children were grown, Tom and Mariana spent 10 years living on Beacon Street in Boston, immersing themselves in everything the city had to offer. An avid sports enthusiast, Tom loved basketball, tennis and golf. He played basketball any chance he got, often coming home with a black eye or bloody nose. Later he took up golf, playing at courses around the world and most frequently at Willowbend and Grey Oaks. In retirement, he and Mariana moved to Florida where they were able to enjoy golf year round. They travelled extensively and enjoyed retirement to its fullest.

He and Mariana were exceptionally generous with both family and organizations they supported. Family was most important to Tom, hosting Thanksgiving and summer celebrations for extended family for 45 years. Those weekends were boisterous and fun and usually featured a game of Jeopardy which Tom frequently won, and some basketball in the driveway.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Mariana; his son Thomas Duncan, spouse Anne and daughter Patricia Mitchell, spouse Jeffrey; grandchildren Mackenzie Duncan Gemunden, Riley Duncan, William Duncan, Samuel Mitchell, Laine Duncan and Lucy Mitchell as well as great grandson Hudson Gemunden; his 6 siblings as well as 24 nieces and nephews and 50 grand nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held on August 11, 2026 at Willowbend Country Club in Mashpee, MA at noon. Family and friends are welcome.
