Wally (Jose) York age 73, passed away on March 28, 2025, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Wally will be remembered for his sociable nature, his quick wit and dry sense of humor.
Wally was born in Wolfeboro, NH and was predeceased by his parents Wally and Phyllis (Flanders) York, his paternal grandmother Emma (Bauer) York, and brother-in-law Larry Cail.
Wally is survived by two sisters: Cheryl York-Cail of Amherst NH, and Barbara Chase (and husband Ken) of Wolfeboro NH. His three nieces; Malinda Jones of Nashua, Jessica Belch (and husband Mark) of Merrimack, and Rachel Connors of Hingham MA; One nephew, Adam Chase (and partner David Vega) of Candia NH; Two great nephews, Evan Connors and Joshua Belch and one great niece, Elle Connors; His Aunt, Jennie Hall of Windham NH and several cousins.
He is also survived by close friends: Carol and Tom Spencer and their son, his godson, Theodore Spencer of Vergennes VT, Linda Aspinwall of Norwood MA and the Aspinwall family, and Bruce Jolin of Rochester NH.
Wally grew up in South Wolfeboro where he enjoyed many summer days on Rust Pond, and playing with all the neighborhood kids. He attended Carpenter School and graduated from Kingswood Regional High School in 1970. During High School Wally took a vacation where he skied in the Alps.
After High School graduation he attended Andover Business School and worked in Boston for a couple of years before returning to Wolfeboro.
Wally worked for many years at Davidson Rubber (Textron) in Farmington NH. Later he was a custodian for 10 years at Prospect Mountain High School in Alton NH, where he was well liked by teachers and students. He retired from there in 2015.
Wally enjoyed walking, bicycling, hiking, skiing and kayaking. Wally loved the beach and enjoyed many happy times camping with other family members at Hermit Island on the Maine coast. He took several European trips with friends Carol and Tom. One included a trip to the town in Germany where his grandmother (Emma) had been born and raised, and finding some relatives still living there.
He shared his life with three beloved Bull Terriers, Zack, Brick and Emma. He could often be seen walking around Wolfeboro with them. Wally also enjoyed walking around the Portsmouth area and getting coffee or dinner with his friends and attending the SGM meetings.
Wally, like his mother and Father, was an avid Red Sox fan and attended many games. Unlike the less faithful fans, they stayed to the end of the “Mother's Day Miracle” win.
The family wishes to thank all the Doctors, Nurses and Staff at Portsmouth Regional Hospital for the excellent and sympathetic care he received there and Beacon Hospice for their kind care and support.
As Wally wished, there will be no calling hours. A Graveside Service will be held at the Pine Hill Cemetery in Wolfeboro, NH on June 21, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Abenaki Ski Lodge located at 390 Pine Hill Road in Wolfeboro, NH starting at 12:30 p.m.
