Melvin Village, NH

"In the early morning of July 25, 2016, Douglas Evans passed away in the home he built. He was a lifelong builder and left his mark on many area homes. Doug traced his roots to Newfoundland, the son of Lewis Wilson Evans and Mildred Florence (Shorey) Evans.

He attended Stoneham, Massachusetts schools and following graduation, he joined the Navy and served on the Destroyer the USS R.E. Kraus. While home on leave, he gave Jean Smith, who lived in the same neighborhood, a ride home. They married in 1958 and moved to Melvin Village in 1968.

Doug had many skills and gifts: He loved kayaking, camping, and joke telling, enjoyed skiing, and was a skilled wood-worker, which he did up until February. He and Jean were avid motorcyclists, frequently touring the roads of New England and the Maritimes of Canada, camping along the way. He enjoyed playing cards and had an excellent poker face, except when he was pulling a prank -- the twinkle in his eye would give him away.

He passed a love of woodworking, crafting, and making things to his sons and grandsons, along with many rules, including how and when to spit, and how to properly eat eggs.

Doug leaves behind his wife, Jean Smith Evans, his sister Frances Finegan, sisters-in-law Jan, Bobbie and Betty, and brother-in-law Peter Smith, his son Lane (Dawn), Scott, and Grant (Andy), his grandsons Jacob and Tyler and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Bert and Dick.
