John A. Hartog of Granite Road passed away peacefully on November 16, 2016. Born in Paterson, NJ, to Albertus and Gertrude Bruinsma Hartog on October 22, 1947, John was the grandson of Dutch immigrants.

He graduated from Eastern Christian High School in North Haledon NJ and attended William Paterson University in Wayne NJ. From 1965 to 1968 John served with the US Navy as a weather observer in Europe. His love for diversity found many different jobs as his career moved ahead when situations got dull. He worked for a period as a product development engineer, all the while owning several homes, most of which he did not live in. Living in Ossipee NH for more that 2 decades, he rehabilitated his ancient home to complete an architectural dream house comprising residence, shop and barn under one roof. John also worked at Lakeview NeuroRehab Center for 7 years and at the USPS as assistant rural carrier for over 20 years in 5 different post offices,, along with running a light construction business. John never complained about being too busy.

John was very social, enjoyed history, architecture and all things old and natural. A past officer with the Ossipee Historical Society, he was always working on some sort of project.

He leaves behind his 2 sisters: Maria H. Coffin and her husband Bruce of Hamden CT, Nancy H. Ruiter and her husband David of Freehold NJ and their children: Elizabeth Coffin, Jonathan Coffin, Stephanie Swann and Emily Stinson.

A memorial service to honor John will be held in the spring.

Donations in John’s memory may be made to Eastern Christian School Association, 50 Oakwood Avenue, North Haledon NJ 07508, or Ossipee Historical Society P.O. Box 245 Ossipee, NH 03864.
